Hyundai Ioniq 5 Battery Health Check
Hyundai Ioniq 5 — Battery Overview
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is one of the most critically acclaimed EVs on the UK market, built on Hyundai's E-GMP platform. It is available with two battery sizes: the Standard Range (58 kWh) and the Long Range (77.4 kWh), in both rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations. WLTP range is approximately 240 miles for the Standard Range and up to 315 miles for the Long Range RWD variant.
A standout feature of the Ioniq 5 is its 800V electrical architecture, enabling ultra-fast charging from 10–80% in around 18 minutes on a 350 kW charger. The vehicle uses a liquid-cooled battery thermal management system and NMC battery chemistry.
Common Battery Concerns
The Ioniq 5 is generally well-regarded for battery reliability, but dealers should note:
- Ultra-fast charging frequency — The Ioniq 5's rapid charging capability is a key selling point, but vehicles that have been charged exclusively at high-power stations may show marginally higher degradation than those with a mix of AC and DC charging.
- Software-reported SoH — Hyundai does not make SoH easily accessible to owners through the standard dashboard or app. This creates uncertainty for buyers, making independent certification even more valuable.
- Battery recall history — Some early Ioniq 5 production was subject to a battery cell recall in certain markets. While most affected vehicles have been remediated, an independent health check provides additional assurance.
- Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) usage — The Ioniq 5 supports bidirectional charging, allowing owners to power external devices. Heavy V2L usage adds charge cycles, which could contribute to long-term degradation.
How the AVILOO FLASH Test Works on the Ioniq 5
Testing follows the same simple process:
- Plug the AVILOO Box into the OBD-2 port (located below the dashboard on the driver's side)
- Wait approximately three minutes — the vehicle remains stationary
- Receive a TÜV-certified battery health certificate immediately
The test works on both Standard Range and Long Range variants, in all drivetrain configurations.
What the Certificate Shows
The AVILOO certificate for a Hyundai Ioniq 5 includes:
- State of Health (SoH) — independently calculated, filling the gap left by Hyundai's own limited SoH visibility
- Cell-level heatmap — condition of each cell module with colour-coded severity
- Certified energy (SoCE) — confirmed remaining capacity in kWh
- Range estimates — real-world range based on actual battery condition
- Peer benchmarking — how this Ioniq 5 compares to others of the same age and mileage
- QR code for buyer verification
Since Hyundai does not readily expose SoH data to owners, a TÜV-certified certificate is particularly impactful on Ioniq 5 listings — it provides information buyers cannot easily obtain themselves.
Dealer Protection
The Consumer Rights Act 2015 places the burden of proof on dealers for faults within six months of sale. A certificate issued at point of sale protects you from disputes and strengthens your listing against uncertified competitors.
