MG4 Battery Health Check

MG4 — Battery Overview

The MG4 has disrupted the UK electric car market with aggressive pricing and solid specifications. Built on SAIC's MSP (Modular Scalable Platform), it is available in three battery configurations: the Standard (51 kWh), Long Range (64 kWh), and Extended Range / Trophy Extended Range (77 kWh). WLTP range spans from approximately 218 miles on the Standard to up to 323 miles on the Extended Range variant.

The MG4 uses a liquid-cooled thermal management system and LFP (lithium iron phosphate) chemistry on some variants, with NMC chemistry on others — a detail that affects charging behaviour and degradation characteristics.

Common Battery Concerns

The MG4's value proposition makes it popular, but dealers should note:

  • Battery chemistry variation — Different MG4 variants use different cell chemistries (LFP and NMC). LFP batteries are generally more durable and tolerate full charges well, but can show less accurate SoC readings at certain charge levels. Knowing the chemistry helps set buyer expectations.
  • Budget positioning and perception — The MG4 is significantly cheaper than competitors, which can lead some buyers to question long-term battery durability. An independent certificate addresses this concern directly with data.
  • High sales volume — The MG4 is one of the best-selling EVs in the UK, meaning large numbers are entering the used market simultaneously. Certification helps your listing stand out in a crowded field.
  • DC charging speed — The Standard variant charges at up to 117 kW DC, while the Long Range supports up to 135 kW. These are respectable figures, but slower than the 800V competitors. Buyers may have varied expectations.

How the AVILOO FLASH Test Works on the MG4

Testing follows the standard three-minute process:

  1. Plug the AVILOO Box into the MG4's OBD-2 port (located under the dashboard)
  2. Wait approximately three minutes while the test runs on the stationary vehicle
  3. Receive a TÜV-certified battery health certificate immediately

No MG-specific tools or training required. Works on all MG4 variants.

What the Certificate Shows

The AVILOO certificate for an MG4 includes:

  • State of Health (SoH) — an independent percentage, not reliant on the vehicle's dashboard
  • Cell-level heatmap — individual cell condition clearly visualised
  • Certified energy (SoCE) — actual remaining capacity in kWh
  • Range estimates — real-world range based on tested battery condition
  • Peer benchmarking — how this MG4 compares to others of the same variant and mileage
  • QR code for buyer verification

In a competitive price bracket, a battery health certificate differentiates your listing and gives budget-conscious buyers the confidence to commit.

Protect Your Margins

The MG4's lower price point means margins are tighter. A battery dispute averaging £6,193 under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 can wipe out profit on multiple sales. A £35 test protects every transaction.
