Polestar 2 Battery Health Check

Polestar 2 — Battery Overview

The Polestar 2 is a premium electric fastback from Volvo's performance EV brand. Originally launched with a 78 kWh battery (75 kWh usable) in single-motor and dual-motor configurations, later updates introduced a Standard Range variant with a 67 kWh battery. WLTP range is approximately 270–340 miles depending on variant, with the single-motor Long Range delivering the highest figure.

The Polestar 2 uses a liquid-cooled thermal management system and NMC battery chemistry. It is built on the CMA platform shared with the Volvo XC40 Recharge.

Common Battery Concerns

Dealers handling used Polestar 2s should be aware of:

  • Software-driven range changes — Polestar has issued over-the-air updates that have altered range estimates and battery management behaviour. Buyers may find that their vehicle's stated range differs from the original specification, creating confusion that an independent SoH reading resolves.
  • Limited brand awareness — Despite being a premium product, Polestar has lower brand recognition in the UK than Tesla or BMW. Buyers may be less familiar with the vehicle's battery technology, making independent certification a valuable trust-builder.
  • Dual-motor energy consumption — The Performance Pack and dual-motor variants consume more energy, and real-world range can fall well short of WLTP figures under spirited driving. Accurate remaining capacity data is essential for setting expectations.
  • Depreciation curve — The Polestar 2 has experienced notable depreciation on the used market. A strong battery certificate can help arrest value erosion by proving the core component is in good condition.

How the AVILOO FLASH Test Works on the Polestar 2

The test takes around three minutes and requires no Polestar-specific tools:

  1. Plug the AVILOO Box into the OBD-2 port (located in the driver's footwell area)
  2. Wait approximately three minutes while battery data is read and transmitted
  3. Receive a TÜV-certified battery health certificate immediately

Works on all variants — Standard Range, Long Range single-motor, and dual-motor.

What the Certificate Shows

The AVILOO certificate for a Polestar 2 includes:

  • State of Health (SoH) — independently verified, not sourced from the Polestar app
  • Cell-level heatmap — visual breakdown of individual cell condition
  • Certified energy (SoCE) — confirmed remaining capacity in kWh
  • Range estimates — WLTP, real-world, and peer-comparison figures
  • Benchmarking — how this Polestar 2 compares to others of similar age and specification
  • QR code for digital buyer verification

In a market where the Polestar 2 competes on value against better-known brands, a TÜV-certified certificate adds credibility that supports your asking price.

Legal Protection

Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, the dealer bears the burden of proof for battery faults appearing within six months. On a vehicle where depreciation has already tightened margins, a dispute costing £6,193 on average is a serious hit. A £35 test is prudent insurance.
