VW ID.4 Battery Health Check
Volkswagen ID.4 — Battery Overview
The Volkswagen ID.4 is VW's electric SUV built on the same MEB platform as the ID.3. It is available with two main battery options: the Pro (77 kWh gross, approximately 72 kWh usable) and, in earlier models, a smaller Pure variant (52 kWh). WLTP range is approximately 320–520 km (200–323 miles) depending on variant and drivetrain configuration (rear-wheel or all-wheel drive via the GTX model).
The ID.4 shares the ID.3's liquid-cooled thermal management and NMC battery chemistry. Its larger size and weight mean real-world range can be more sensitive to driving conditions than the lighter ID.3.
Common Battery Concerns
Dealers handling used ID.4s should consider:
- Weight and real-world range — The ID.4 is heavier than the ID.3 and more aerodynamically blunt. Real-world range often falls shorter of WLTP figures than buyers expect. Providing certified remaining capacity helps manage expectations.
- AWD GTX energy consumption — The all-wheel-drive GTX variant consumes more energy, leading to faster perceived range reduction. Buyers upgrading from a more efficient EV may notice the difference.
- Software maturity — Like the ID.3, early ID.4 production experienced software issues. Most have been resolved, but buyer hesitancy can linger. Independent certification adds confidence.
- Towing impact — The ID.4 is rated for towing, but towing significantly increases energy consumption and can accelerate degradation over time in heavily used vehicles.
How the AVILOO FLASH Test Works on the ID.4
The process is identical to all MEB-platform vehicles:
- Plug the AVILOO Box into the OBD-2 port under the dashboard
- Wait approximately three minutes while the test runs on the stationary vehicle
- Receive a TÜV-certified certificate immediately
No VW-specific diagnostic equipment or specialist training is needed.
What the Certificate Shows
The AVILOO certificate for a Volkswagen ID.4 includes:
- State of Health (SoH) — an independent percentage, not the manufacturer's estimate
- Cell-level heatmap — individual cell and module condition with severity indicators
- Certified energy (SoCE) — actual remaining usable capacity in kWh
- Range estimates — WLTP, peer-comparison, and real-world projections
- Benchmarking — comparison against other ID.4s of the same variant, age, and mileage
- QR code for digital buyer verification
For an SUV where real-world range varies significantly, a certificate showing actual remaining energy is a powerful listing asset.
Legal Protection for Dealers
Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, battery faults appearing within six months of sale are presumed to have existed at the point of sale unless you can prove otherwise. A TÜV-certified battery certificate is your proof — timestamped, auditable, and independent.
