Real-World Range of the UK's Most Popular Used EVs
If you are shopping for a used electric car, the range figure on the advert is almost never the range you will actually get. That number comes from a lab test, and your car will be driven in the real UK: motorways, cold mornings, the heater on, a few years of use behind it.
This guide walks through the typical real-world range of some of the most popular used EVs on UK forecourts. Treat every figure here as a ballpark for the model, not a promise for any single car. Two examples of the same model and year can behave very differently, because battery health varies from car to car. We will come back to why that matters at the end.

Nissan Leaf (40 kWh)
The Leaf is one of the most common used EVs in Britain, and the 40 kWh version is the one most people are looking at. According to Recurrent, a 2018 40 kWh Leaf realistically delivers about 90 to 130 miles of usable range, depending on speed, temperature and battery health. The same source notes that this generation typically shows around 10 to 20% degradation after five years.
There is one thing that makes the Leaf different from most rivals. Its battery is passively air-cooled, with no liquid cooling system. That means heat, from hot weather, from rapid charging, or from a hard life, has a bigger effect on long-term degradation than it does on a liquid-cooled car. So with a used Leaf, the history and the current battery condition matter even more than the mileage on the clock.
Tesla Model 3
The Model 3 holds up well against its advertised figures, but UK winters still take a bite. CarBuyerIQ puts the real winter range at roughly 170 to 210 miles for a Standard Range car and 220 to 270 miles for a Long Range car. Those are cold-weather numbers, so a mild spring day will do better, but they are a useful worst-case to plan around.
The gap between the two versions is worth keeping in mind when you shop. A Standard Range car that has lost a little capacity can start to feel tight for longer trips in January, while a Long Range car gives you more headroom for the same winter conditions.
Kia e-Niro / Niro EV (64 kWh)
The 64 kWh Kia is one of the strongest performers in this class. Green Car Reports, in a UK highway test, measured around 250 miles of real-world range. Motorway driving is usually the hardest test for an EV, so a figure like that at speed points to a genuinely capable long-distance used buy.
As always, that is the figure for a healthy example. An older, higher-mileage Niro will not match a nearly new one, which is exactly why the model average only gets you so far.
Renault Zoe, MG ZS EV and VW e-Golf
For some popular used models there is no single reliable UK real-world figure we would stand behind, so we will keep this qualitative rather than quote a number we cannot source.
The Renault Zoe was sold with several battery sizes over its life, and some early cars were leased-battery rather than owned-battery, so it pays to check exactly which version and which pack you are looking at. Expect real-world range to sit well below the headline, as it does with every EV here.
The MG ZS EV came in more than one battery size and more than one generation, so real range varies a lot depending on which one you are viewing. Confirm the exact model year and battery before you compare adverts.
The VW e-Golf was an early, smaller-battery EV, so its usable range is modest by today's standards and, as an older car, battery condition is a central factor rather than a footnote.
In all three cases the honest answer is the same: the badge tells you the ballpark, the specific car tells you the truth.
Why the model average only gets you so far
Every figure above describes a model, not a car. Real-world range is shaped by things that have nothing to do with the badge on the boot.
- Battery health. Capacity fades over time. Geotab's analysis of more than 22,700 EVs found an average loss of roughly 2.3% per year, leaving a typical pack at about 81.6% of its original capacity after eight years. That is a fleet average across many makes and models, not a guarantee for any one car, and real examples sit on both sides of it.
- Temperature. Cold weather alone can knock a large chunk off range, which is why the winter figures above look so different from the advert. We go deeper on this in EV winter range explained.
- Speed. Steady town driving is kind to an EV. Sustained motorway speed is not.
- History. How a car was charged and where it lived matters, and it matters most on passively cooled cars like the Leaf.
Because of all that, two cars of the same model and year can offer noticeably different range. One might have been gently used and garaged; the other rapid-charged daily in a hot climate. The advert cannot tell them apart. Neither can the mileage.
The only number that tells you about this car
A model guide like this one is genuinely useful for narrowing your shortlist. It tells you whether a car is in the right ballpark for your commute and your trips. What it cannot tell you is how much life is left in the specific battery in front of you.
For that, you need a measurement, not an estimate. The most reliable answer comes from an independent, cell-level test that reads the actual condition of the pack rather than guessing from age or mileage.
