EV Range in Winter: Why It Drops and How Much Is Normal

The first cold snap in a new-to-you electric car can be unsettling. The range that looked healthy in September suddenly reads much lower, the battery seems to drain faster on the motorway, and rapid charging feels slower than it did. It is easy to jump to the conclusion that something is wrong with the battery. Usually, nothing is.

Winter range loss is one of the most normal, most predictable things an EV does. It happens to every electric car, new or used, and it lifts again as soon as the weather warms. This guide explains why cold cuts range, how much of a drop is normal in a UK winter, and the one situation where a winter drop is actually worth investigating.

Why cold weather cuts range

There is no single cause. Winter range loss is really three things happening at once.

The battery chemistry slows down

A lithium-ion battery works by moving ions between its cells. When it is cold, that movement slows. The pack cannot deliver or accept energy as freely, which is also why rapid charging is slower in winter and why a cold car sometimes limits its own performance until the battery warms. None of this damages the battery. It is temporary physics, and it reverses as the pack heats up through use.

Heating the cabin comes straight off the battery

This is the big one. A petrol car heats the cabin almost for free, using waste heat from the engine. An EV has no waste heat to spare, so cabin warmth is drawn directly from the same battery that moves the car. On a cold morning, running the heater, the demister and heated glass can take a meaningful slice of your range before you have driven a mile.

The car spends energy keeping itself warm

Many EVs gently warm or protect the battery in very cold conditions, and short winter journeys rarely give the pack time to reach an efficient temperature. Cold tyres, cold air and winter conditions all add rolling resistance too. Add it up and the car is simply working harder to do the same trip.

How much of a drop is normal

For a UK winter, a real-world range that sits 20 to 40% below the official WLTP figure (CarBuyerIQ) is entirely normal. The colder the day and the shorter the trip, the closer you get to the top of that range.

That sounds dramatic until you remember the WLTP number was never a winter figure. It is a lab test run at around 23 degrees with the climate control switched off, which is why real UK driving almost always comes in lower (Motability). Winter simply widens the gap that already exists the rest of the year. A concrete example helps. For a Tesla Model 3, UK winter real-world range works out to roughly 170 to 210 miles for a Standard Range car and 220 to 270 miles for a Long Range one (CarBuyerIQ). On the coldest days that sits at the upper end of the typical 20 to 40% winter reduction. A Model 3 owner seeing that in January is not looking at a battery fault. They are looking at a normal cold-weather car.

The key marker is not the size of the drop. It is whether the range comes back.

The tips that actually help in winter

You cannot beat the physics, but you can claw back a useful chunk of range with a few habits.

Precondition while still plugged in

This is the single most effective trick. Most EVs let you warm the cabin and the battery on a schedule or from an app before you set off. Do it while the car is still connected to the charger, and the energy for warming comes from the wall rather than from your battery. You drive away with a warm cabin, a warmer and more efficient pack, and your full range intact.

Heat the person, not the whole car

Seat heaters and a heated steering wheel warm you directly and use a fraction of the energy of blasting the cabin heater. Lean on them first, and use the cabin heat to top up rather than as your main source of warmth.

Use the heat pump and eco settings if you have them

Many newer EVs have a heat pump, which produces cabin warmth far more efficiently than a plain electric heater. If your car has one, let it do its job. Eco or range modes also gently limit power and heating draw, which adds up over a cold journey.

Keep expectations sensible for short trips

The short, cold, stop-start journeys typical of winter are the least efficient kind of driving for an EV, because the battery never fully warms. That is worth knowing before you panic at the trip computer after a five-minute school run on a frosty morning.

When a winter drop is worth a second look

Here is the important part. Almost every winter range drop is temporary and recovers with warmer weather. That recovery is the tell.

If your car reads low in January but returns to its usual mild-weather range in spring, the battery behaved exactly as it should. If, on the other hand, the reduced range persists once the weather warms up, and your usable range in a mild spring or summer is clearly lower than it was in the same conditions a year earlier, that is a different conversation. Persistent loss that does not track the seasons can point to genuine degradation rather than cold.

It is also worth knowing what a normal degradation curve looks like so you can tell ordinary ageing from a real problem. Across a large fleet, EV batteries lose capacity slowly, averaging around 2.3% a year, with most of the small early loss coming in the first year or two before it flattens (Geotab, fleet average). That gentle, gradual pattern looks nothing like a sudden seasonal swing.

The trouble is that a dashboard range estimate cannot tell you which one you are dealing with. It reacts to temperature, to your recent driving and to the heater, and it does not measure the actual health of the cells inside the pack. Reading the seasons off a trip computer is guesswork.

Knowing for sure

If you own an EV and simply want reassurance that a winter drop is nothing more than winter, the honest answer is to wait for warmer weather and see if the range returns. If it does, you have your answer for free.

But if you are buying a used EV in the colder months, you are in a harder spot. You cannot tell from a cold test drive whether a modest range figure is the weather talking or the battery, and 88% of used EV buyers say they want an independent battery health assessment before they commit (Startline Motor Finance Used Car Tracker, August 2025). The only way to separate temporary cold from genuine wear is to look inside the pack directly, cell by cell, rather than trusting the number on the screen.
