Why an Independent Battery Check Matters
Every used EV battery check is not the same
If you are buying a used electric car, you will see the phrase "battery health checked" more and more. That is a good thing. Checking the battery before you buy is exactly what you should expect.
But there is a real difference between the checks on offer, and it is worth understanding before you rely on one. It is not about whether a check is real. Most are real tests, run by real businesses. The difference is where the health figure comes from, and whether anyone independent has stood behind it.
The difference is independence, not the cable
Almost every battery check, including the AVILOO FLASH test we use, plugs into the same standard diagnostic port on the car. So the difference is not the socket or the cable. The difference is what happens to the data after that.
A car already keeps its own running estimate of battery condition inside its battery management system, often shortened to BMS. Many quick checks simply read that number out of the car and print a certificate around it. The figure can be perfectly genuine. But it is the car reporting on itself.
An independent check does something different. It gathers live measurements from the pack and calculates the battery's State of Health separately, rather than repeating the number the car has stored about itself. On an AVILOO certificate, the State of Health is independently calculated, not taken from the vehicle's BMS, using AVILOO's published State of Health methodology.
That is the whole point of an independent assessment: a second opinion, worked out from the evidence, instead of the car marking its own homework.
Why the car's own number is not the full story
A battery management system is built to run the car safely and smoothly day to day. It is not designed to grade the pack for resale, and it does not have to answer to a buyer. So a figure that is fine for keeping the car driving is not necessarily the figure you want to base a used-car purchase on.
An independent test is built for exactly that job: to describe the true condition of the pack, in a form that a buyer, a seller, and if needed a third party can all rely on.
Health measured by energy, not just a headline percentage
There is also a difference in what "health" actually means.
The AVILOO method measures State of Health by energy: how much usable energy the pack can still hold and deliver, expressed in kilowatt-hours, as set out in AVILOO's State of Health whitepaper. In plain terms, an energy-based State of Health tracks the thing you actually care about: real-world range. If the energy State of Health is 90 percent, you have roughly 90 percent of the range you started with.
An average can hide a weak spot
A battery pack is not one big cell. It is made up of many individual cells working together, and they do not always age at the same rate.
That matters because a single overall percentage is an average across the whole pack. A healthy-looking average can still sit on top of one weaker group of cells, and it is often the weakest part of a pack that shapes how the battery behaves. An AVILOO certificate includes a cell-level heatmap that shows the condition across the pack, not just one headline number, so a weak area shows up instead of being averaged away.
Verified by an independent third party
Independence only counts if someone independent has checked the method as well as the result.
The AVILOO testing methodology is TÜV Certified, which means an independent technical authority has assessed how the test works. And because certificates are issued directly by AVILOO and cannot be edited by the tester or by us, the result you see is the result AVILOO produced. No one in the sale can adjust the numbers in their own favour.
Why independence is the part that protects you
This is where independence stops being a technicality and starts being useful to you as a buyer.
In the UK, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives you real protection when you buy from a trader. In the first six months, if a fault turns out to have been there at the point of sale, the law presumes it was present at delivery unless the seller can show otherwise. An independent, dated record of the battery's condition on the day you bought the car is exactly the kind of clear evidence that helps everyone, buyer and seller, if a question ever comes up later. In Ireland, the Consumer Rights Act 2022 gives buyers similar protection when buying from a trader.
That is also why buyers ask for it. In the Startline Motor Finance Used Car Tracker (2025), 88 percent of used EV buyers said they want an independent battery health assessment before they buy. An independent, TÜV Certified certificate is precisely that.

And it is not only about peace of mind. Independently certified cars have been shown to be worth more: certified vehicles command £450 to £900 more than uncertified equivalents. A certified battery is worth more, to the seller and to you.
The cost of getting it wrong
Getting the battery wrong is the single most expensive way to be caught out on a used EV. Battery disputes are already reaching people: the average EV dispute brought to the Motor Ombudsman was £6,193 in Q4 2025. A short, independent test at the point of sale is a small step that avoids a large problem later.
