Used EV Battery Degradation: How Much Is Normal?

If you are looking at a used electric car, one number tends to sit at the back of your mind: how much of the battery is left. It is a fair thing to worry about. The battery is the single most expensive part of the car, and nobody wants to buy a problem.

Here is the reassuring part. Some loss of capacity is completely normal, and a car that has lost a little of its range is not a car with a fault. The trick is knowing the difference between ordinary, healthy ageing and an actual problem. This guide walks you through it in plain terms.

What "degradation" actually means

Every EV battery slowly loses a small amount of its usable capacity over time. That is degradation. A battery that could hold, say, 60 kWh when it left the factory might hold a little less after a few years. In day-to-day terms, that shows up as slightly less range on a full charge.

This is measured as State of Health, usually written as a percentage. A brand new battery is 100%. A three or four year old car might read somewhere in the low-to-mid 90s. That is not damage. It is chemistry doing exactly what chemistry does.

Every rechargeable battery you own behaves this way, from your phone to your laptop. EV batteries are simply built to a far higher standard and are managed by sophisticated software, which is why they hold up so much better than the battery in your pocket.

The normal curve: front-loaded, then slow

The most useful thing to understand is the shape of degradation, because it surprises people.

Battery loss is front-loaded. An EV tends to lose a noticeable slice of capacity in its first year, then the rate of loss slows down and settles into a gentle, roughly linear decline for years afterwards. Why does this matter to you as a buyer? Because a car that is three years old has already been through its steepest drop. The early, faster loss is behind it. From that point the battery ages slowly and predictably. In many ways a three or four year old EV with a healthy reading is a safer bet than the raw age might suggest.

So if you see a used EV sitting at 92% or 94%, that is not a warning sign. That is a normal battery that has done its front-loaded settling and is now ambling along the slow part of the curve.

What actually drives degradation

A handful of things influence how quickly a battery ages. Knowing them helps you read a car's history sensibly rather than fearfully.

Chemistry and age

Different batteries use different chemistries, and they age at slightly different rates. Time itself also plays a part. A battery degrades a little just by existing, whether the car is driven hard or barely used at all. This is called calendar ageing.

Heat

Heat is the big one. Batteries dislike being hot for long periods, which is why sustained high temperatures and heavy rapid charging in quick succession are harder on a pack than gentle use. Most modern EVs actively cool their batteries to manage exactly this.

Charging habits

How the previous owner charged matters more than how they drove. Constantly charging to 100% and running down to near empty is more wearing than keeping the battery in a comfortable middle band for daily use. Frequent rapid charging on long trips is fine occasionally, but a car fed almost entirely on rapid chargers may show a touch more wear.

Driving style (less than you think)

This is where a lot of buyers worry unnecessarily. Enthusiastic driving does far less damage to a battery than most people assume. Normal ageing versus an actual problem

So far we have described healthy degradation. But how do you spot a battery that has a genuine issue rather than ordinary wear? A real problem tends to look different.

  • A reading that is out of step with the car's age and mileage. A low-mileage two year old car reading unusually low deserves questions.
  • Range that has dropped suddenly rather than drifting down gently over years.
  • Uneven cells. A pack is made of many cells, and they should be closely matched. When some cells drift away from the rest, the whole pack becomes less reliable, and this can hide behind an otherwise reasonable-looking headline percentage. That last point is the important one. A simple percentage on a dashboard cannot always tell you whether the cells underneath are healthy and balanced. Two cars can show the same overall State of Health while being in very different real conditions. That is the gap between reassurance and certainty, and it is exactly the gap an independent test closes.

How to get certainty either way

Here is the honest position. Most used EV batteries are fine. Degradation is normal, it is slow after the first year, and a slightly reduced range is not a defect. You do not need to be afraid of every used EV on a forecourt.

But "most are fine" is not the same as "this one is fine". The only way to know the true condition of the specific car in front of you is to have the battery independently checked, right down to the cell level.
