How Long Do EV Batteries Last?

It is the question that stops a lot of people from buying a used electric car: how long will the battery actually last? Behind it sits a worry about a huge bill somewhere down the line, and a suspicion that these cars are quietly ticking clocks.

The honest, reassuring answer is that a modern EV battery is built to outlast the way most of us own cars. The pack is not a consumable that wears out on a fixed schedule like a set of tyres. It is a long-life component that ages slowly and predictably, and in the vast majority of cars it will still be doing its job long after you have moved on to your next vehicle.

Here is what "long" really means, in years and in miles, and where the exceptions hide.

Lifespan in years and miles

There is no single expiry date stamped on a battery, but the working consensus is comfortably into the region of ten to fifteen years and often further. Many packs are expected to keep enough usable capacity to be perfectly serviceable well beyond 100,000 miles.

The reason for the confidence is partly the data now coming through and partly how manufacturers back these cars. Battery warranties commonly run for around 8 years or 100,000 miles, guaranteeing the pack stays above a capacity floor of roughly 70% in that time, though the exact terms vary by brand. No manufacturer would offer a warranty that long on a part they expected to fail early. It is worth reading these numbers as a floor rather than a prediction: a warranty promises the pack will not fall below a threshold, and most real-world packs comfortably beat it.

For a sense of scale, consider a car bought at three years old and kept for four. Over that ownership the battery is nowhere near the end of its useful life. It is still, in most cases, in the healthy middle of a very long curve.

The shape of ageing: front-loaded, then slow

The single most useful thing to understand about battery life is the shape of it, because it is not a straight line down.

A battery loses a little of its capacity relatively quickly in the first year or two, then the rate of loss slows down and settles into a long, gentle decline. So an early dip is normal and not a warning sign. It is the steady, slow phase that follows, and that phase lasts a very long time.

Large-scale data backs this up. An analysis by Geotab of more than 22,700 electric vehicles found an average degradation of about 2.3% of capacity per year. That is a fleet average across many makes, models and ages, not a figure for any one car, but it paints the broad picture well: most packs retain 80% or more of their capacity after eight years of use.

What actually shortens a battery's life

If most batteries last a long time, why do you sometimes hear about ones that have aged badly? The answer is that a handful of factors can accelerate wear, and a car's history matters more than its badge.

Heat. Sustained high temperatures are the biggest enemy of a lithium battery. A car that has spent its life in a hot climate, or regularly parked baking in full sun, will tend to age faster than one kept somewhere cool. Most EVs manage pack temperature actively to protect against this, but the exposure still counts.

Constant rapid charging. The occasional motorway rapid charge does no meaningful harm. A car that has been rapid charged almost exclusively, day in and day out, puts more thermal and electrical stress on the pack over time. A mix that leans on slower home or workplace charging is gentler.

Sitting at extremes of charge. Leaving a battery sitting for long periods at a very high or very low state of charge is harder on it than keeping it in the middle. A pack left at 100% in the heat for weeks is being asked to work hard while doing nothing.

Very high mileage with heavy use. Miles alone are not the whole story, but a lot of hard, fast, high-load driving cycles the battery more.

None of these are reasons to avoid used EVs. They are reasons to understand that two cars of the same age and mileage can be in genuinely different health, depending on how they were treated.

Why the individual car is the real variable

This is the crux of it. The averages are excellent news, but you are not buying an average. You are buying one specific car with one specific history, and that history is largely invisible from the driver's seat.

Two identical models on the same forecourt, same year, similar miles, can hold quite different amounts of capacity. Age and mileage on the advert tell you almost nothing about the state of the pack, because they say nothing about the heat, the charging pattern or the way the car was used. A tired battery does not look tired from the outside, and a dashboard range estimate is not a reliable guide either.

That is why the sensible move is to have the battery itself checked, rather than reasoning from the year and the odometer. A proper State of Health reading turns the one genuine unknown into a number you can actually see. The bottom line

EV batteries last a long time. In years, think comfortably into the teens for many packs; in miles, well past 100,000 for most. The ageing is front-loaded then slow, the fleet-average loss is modest, and the majority of batteries outlast the period any one owner keeps the car. Manufacturer warranties, running to around 8 years and 100,000 miles, back that up.

The catch is not the technology. It is the specific car in front of you, and whether its history has been kind or hard on the pack. You cannot read that from the advert, but you can measure it directly.
