Should You Buy a Used EV With High Mileage?
If you have spent years buying petrol and diesel cars, the odometer is where your eye goes first. High miles means more wear, more risk, and a lower price. It is a habit that has served used-car buyers well for decades, because engines, gearboxes and clutches all wear roughly in step with distance travelled.
Electric cars break that habit. On an EV, the single most valuable component is the battery, and the battery does not age the way an engine does. That changes the whole calculation. A high-mileage electric car is not automatically a worse buy than a low-mileage one, and in some cases it is the better deal. What matters is the health of the pack, and that is something you can actually measure.
Why mileage means less on an EV
An electric drivetrain has very few moving parts. There is no timing chain to stretch, no clutch to slip, no exhaust to corrode, no oil to burn. The motor and the reduction gear are simple and long-lived. So the usual mechanical worries that pile up with mileage on a combustion car largely do not apply.
That leaves the battery. And here is the key point: the battery does not degrade purely by distance. It degrades by a combination of time, temperature, charging habits and how hard it was worked. Two cars with the same 60,000 miles on the clock can have very different packs underneath, depending entirely on the life each one led.

What actually wears an EV battery
If not miles, then what? A few factors do most of the damage, and none of them show up on the dashboard.
Heat
Batteries hate sustained heat. A car that spent its life in a hot climate, regularly parked in direct sun, will typically show more degradation than the same model kept somewhere temperate. Heat during charging is especially hard on the cells.
Rapid charging
Fast DC chargers are convenient, but they push high currents and generate heat every time. A car that lived on motorway rapid chargers, topped up from near-empty to full over and over, has worked its battery far harder than one charged gently overnight on a home wallbox. The mileage might be identical. The wear is not.
Charging to the extremes
Sitting for long periods at 100%, or being run down to near zero repeatedly, adds stress. An owner who kept the car in a sensible middle band most of the time will have looked after the pack without even trying.
The shape of degradation
The reassuring part is that batteries do not decline in a straight line down to nothing. Degradation is front-loaded: most EVs lose a small slice of capacity in the first year or two, then the rate slows and flattens out. Aggregated fleet data from telematics firm Geotab has put average degradation at roughly 2.3% per year across more than 22,700 vehicles, with most cars still holding above 80% of capacity after eight years. That is a fleet average across many makes and models, not a guarantee for any single car, but it shows the pattern: a well-treated pack ages slowly and predictably.
Why a high-mileage EV can be the smart buy
Put those two ideas together and something interesting falls out.
Imagine two cars of the same model and year. One has 70,000 miles, most of them steady motorway runs, charged overnight at home, kept in a mild climate. The other has 25,000 miles but lived in a city, leaned heavily on rapid chargers, and was often left baking at 100% in summer.
The market, still pricing on mileage, will value the 25,000-mile car far higher. But the battery in the 70,000-mile car could easily be in better health. Gentle motorway miles and slow home charging are about the kindest life a pack can have. Short, hard, rapid-charged city miles are among the harshest.
That gap is the opportunity for a buyer who knows what to look for. A high-mileage EV with a genuinely healthy battery, priced as though it were tired, can be a real bargain. The pounds-per-mile of remaining battery life may be far better than on the shiny low-mileage car next to it.
The reverse is the trap. A low-mileage EV with a quietly worn pack looks like the safe choice and can turn out to be the expensive mistake, because a battery replacement runs from around £12,000 to well over £25,000 depending on the car. That single number is why the pack, not the odometer, deserves your attention.
How to actually check the battery
None of this helps if you are guessing. The good news is that battery condition is measurable, and you do not have to take the seller's word for it.
Start by asking how the car was charged and where it lived. Mostly home charging and a temperate life are good signs. Constant rapid charging and a hot climate are reasons to look harder. Ask to see any battery health readout the car can show on its own screen, but treat it as a rough guide rather than gospel, because manufacturers calculate those figures differently and they are not directly comparable between brands.
Then judge the number against the car's age and mileage, not in isolation. A slightly lower percentage on a high-mileage car is normal and fine. The same figure on a nearly new car is a red flag. For anything approaching a serious purchase, the only reliable answer comes from an independent test. A dashboard figure is the manufacturer marking its own homework. An independent, TÜV-certified test measures the pack directly and gives you a comparable State of Health figure you can trust across any make or model. It is the difference between hoping the battery is healthy and knowing it is.
The bottom line
Do not let a high mileage put you off a used EV, and do not let a low one lull you. On an electric car the odometer is a distraction. What you are really buying is the battery, and the battery keeps its own record of how it was treated, one that has nothing to do with the number on the clock.
