Few used EVs come with a battery story as varied as the BMW i3. Sold from 2013 to 2021, it wears one name over three completely different batteries, and it cools its pack in a way most rivals of its era did not. That is good news, because the i3 tends to age well, but it also means "a used i3" can mean very different things.

The single biggest reason its batteries hold up is cooling. The earliest 60Ah car predates WLTP, so its around 130 mile figure is an NEDC rating, not a modern WLTP number. On the 120Ah car, BMW quoted roughly 160 to 162 miles in real-world use, dropping toward 120 miles in Comfort mode (Auto Express / BMW). Battery design and cooling

The i3 runs Samsung SDI prismatic NCM cells. Rather than a separate glycol loop or fan-forced air, the pack is cooled by the car's air conditioning refrigerant circuit feeding an evaporative cooling plate that covers roughly 23% of the pack floor (Green Car Future / batterydesign.net). Heat is the main driver of lithium-ion degradation, so keeping cells cool is what lets the i3 stay well ahead of the air-cooled Leaf, which Geotab fleet data puts closer to 4.2% a year. Peak DC fast charging is modest at around 50 kW, which also limits thermal stress. The Samsung SDI 94Ah cell was independently modelled as good for roughly 524,000 miles (PushEVs / InsideEVs).

How the battery ages

On aggregate the i3 ages gently. Recurrent fleet data shows roughly 92% of range retained at 3 years and about 89% at 5 years, close to 2% loss a year on Geotab's numbers. These are fleet averages, not a per-VIN guarantee.

A typical i3 loses 2 to 3% in the first year, then declines slowly, accelerating after year four with heat or frequent fast charging. Known issues and recalls

The i3 has two documented recalls, both narrow in scope and worth checking by VIN.

  • Electric Motor Electronics module fault (NHTSA 19V-310 and 19V-599): a circuit-board fault on some 2018 to 2019 cars could cut high-voltage power and cause loss of propulsion. The remedy was a free EME module replacement. These are US references and should be VIN-checked.
  • High-voltage cell defect (NHTSA 22V-683): a voluntary US recall on a small number of MY2019 to 2021 cars where certain battery cells were out of spec, risking a short circuit. The remedy was replacement of the affected cell modules. UK and EU equivalents exist, so confirm completion with a BMW dealer using the VIN.

Battery warranty

In the UK the high-voltage battery is warranted for 8 years or 100,000 miles from first registration, whichever comes first, covering capacity loss below 70% of original net capacity as measured at a BMW i authorised workshop (bmw.co.uk warranty guidelines). In January 2020 BMW extended the European guarantee to 8 years / 160,000 km (Electrive / InsideEVs).
