Signs of a Failing or Degraded EV Battery

If your electric car suddenly seems to go fewer miles on a charge, it is natural to worry the battery is on its way out. Sometimes that worry is justified. Very often it is not. The tricky part is that most of the symptoms people notice are ambiguous, and the same behaviour can come from a cold week, a change in your driving, or a genuine problem inside the pack.

This guide walks through the signs that are worth paying attention to, how to separate normal variation from real degradation, and the one reliable way to get a straight answer.

The signs worth noticing

None of these on their own proves a battery is failing. Together, and especially when they persist across seasons, they are worth taking seriously.

Range that keeps dropping and does not come back

A used EV will show less range than it did when new. That is expected and normal. What matters is the pattern. Seasonal range loss returns when the weather warms up. Genuine degradation does not. If your usable range in mild spring or summer weather is clearly lower than it was in the same conditions a year ago, that is a more meaningful signal than a bad week in January.

The car charges differently than it used to

Changes in charging behaviour can be an early hint. That might mean rapid charging that slows down sooner than it once did, a battery that no longer seems to take a full charge, or a car that reaches 100% far quicker than expected because there is less capacity to fill. On its own this is weak evidence, batteries taper charging by design, but a clear change from how the car used to behave is worth logging.

Warning lights or messages

A battery or powertrain warning light, a "reduced power" message, or a fault flagged on the dashboard should never be ignored. These do not always mean a failing pack, but they are the car telling you something specific. Get it read by a technician who can pull the fault codes rather than guessing.

Range that jumps around unpredictably

Every EV's range estimate moves with temperature, speed and how you drive. But if the figure swings wildly for no obvious reason, or two similar journeys give very different results, it can point to cells that are out of balance or a battery management system struggling to read the pack accurately. The hard part: telling normal from genuine degradation

Here is where most people go wrong. They notice one symptom, assume the worst, and either panic or ignore a real issue. The reality is that several everyday factors mimic the signs of a failing battery.

Cold weather is the usual culprit

Cold is the single biggest reason a healthy EV suddenly looks like it has lost range. In near-freezing conditions a noticeable drop in range is completely normal. The chemistry slows down, cabin heating draws power, and the car may use energy to warm the battery itself. None of this is damage. It comes back when the temperature rises. If your range dip lines up with a cold snap, that is almost certainly what you are seeing.

How and where you drive

Range is not a fixed number. Motorway driving at 70mph uses far more energy than town driving. A hilly route, a headwind, a fully loaded car, or a boot full of luggage all cut range. So do accessories that add drag. A roof box or bike rack can take a surprisingly large bite out of your range, which we explained in how roof racks kill EV range. If your "range loss" appeared the week you fitted a roof box, you have found your answer.

Driving style matters less than people think

There is a persistent belief that gentle driving preserves the battery and spirited driving wears it out. The evidence does not really support the scare stories, and we looked at the research in does sporty driving protect an EV battery. The short version: normal enthusiastic driving is not what kills a battery.

The car's own estimate can mislead you

The "guess-o-meter" range display is exactly that, a prediction based on recent driving. Do a few motorway runs and it drops. Do a few gentle town trips and it climbs. This can look like the battery changing when nothing about the battery has changed at all.

Why symptoms alone can never give you a clear answer

Notice the theme running through all of this. Almost every warning sign has an innocent explanation, and almost every innocent explanation can hide a real one. Range loss might be the weather, or it might be degradation. Slower charging might be normal tapering, or it might be a cell problem. You cannot tell the difference by feel, and neither can a general mechanic without the right tools.

This is the core issue for anyone buying or owning a used EV. The battery is the most valuable part of the car, replacement runs from £12,000 to well over £25,000, yet its condition is invisible. You cannot see it the way you can see tyre tread or a service history. A seller quoting a range figure or a dashboard percentage is not giving you a verified measurement.

It is no surprise that 88% of used EV buyers say they want an independent battery health assessment before they buy (Startline Motor Finance Used Car Tracker, August 2025). People instinctively understand that the visible signs are not enough.

The only reliable answer is a proper measurement

If you are genuinely concerned, the way to stop guessing is to have the battery measured independently. A test that reads the pack directly, rather than trusting the dashboard, can tell you the actual State of Health and, crucially, whether individual cells are weak or out of balance.
