The Jaguar I-Pace is one of the more complicated used EVs to buy well. It is a well-engineered electric SUV with a liquid-cooled pack, yet it sits at the centre of a live battery fire-risk recall over its LG cells, carries a 90% charge cap on many cars, and has depreciated hard enough that clean examples now sell under 14,000 pounds. The most useful thing to know before buying is the real condition of the specific battery in front of you.

Real-world range by version

The I-Pace used a single 90kWh battery across every trim (S, SE, HSE, First Edition and Black), all dual-motor all-wheel drive with 400PS. There is no smaller or larger pack, so version differences come down to model year, wheels and trim, not battery size.

Battery design and cooling

The I-Pace pack is one of the better engineering stories in this class, holding 432 LG Chem pouch cells in 36 aluminium modules of 12 cells each, on a structural aluminium tray. A water-glycol coolant circulates under the modules to keep cells at an optimum 15 to 30C and within around 2C of each other (InsideEVs). That active-liquid system is a real degradation advantage over air-cooled rivals such as the early Nissan LEAF, where uneven cell temperatures accelerate wear.

The catch is that these same LG cells are the subject of the fire-risk recalls, so good thermal design does not remove the need to check the cells in a specific car.

How the battery ages

Robust, I-Pace-specific degradation data is thin. Recurrent reports around 93% of range retained at three years and around 90% at five years, but warns of a limited number of Jaguar cars in its research fleet, so treat those as preliminary. As a broader reference, Geotab's 2026 study of more than 22,700 EVs found an average loss of about 2.3% per year, rising to about 3.0% for cars regularly DC fast-charged above 100kW. Known issues and recalls

In 2023 Jaguar Land Rover recalled all roughly 6,400 US I-Paces (model years 2019 to 2024) after eight customer vehicle fires, with an interim software fix limiting charging (Electrek, InsideEVs); the current interim remedy caps charging at 90%. The root cause was a cell-construction defect: LG Energy Solution cells with folded anode tabs that can short-circuit internally.

In February 2026 a fresh US action was filed with NHTSA (RCAK-26V067) covering 2,278 model-year 2020-2021 cars for the same folded-anode-tab risk, with the 90% cap again applied and a permanent remedy still under development (NHTSA; Electric Cars Report). In the UK the DVSA says over 26,000 vehicles built up to the end of the 2021 model year are believed affected, under recall references H570 and H572, with owners advised to park and charge outdoors while no permanent fix exists (autoevolution).

In November 2024 JLR bought back more than 2,700 model-year 2019 cars in the US rather than repair them, and UK owners have run a Change.org petition demanding a permanent fix or buy-back. Precise UK affected-vehicle counts are not cleanly published beyond the DVSA estimate.

None of this means every used I-Pace is unsafe. It means the specific car matters: whether it is within an affected build range, whether the interim software is applied, and its State of Health once you look past the 90% cap.
