Battery design and cooling

The ID.3 uses NMC (nickel-manganese-cobalt) pouch and prismatic cells in modules bolted to the pack floor. That active liquid cooling is not a marketing footnote. How the battery ages

The standout evidence for the ID.3 is an independent one. ADAC ran a four-year, 160,000 km (about 99,000-mile) endurance test on an ID.3 Pro S with the 77 kWh pack. At the end the battery still held around 91% of its usable capacity, give or take 3%, and usable range had fallen by only about eight miles (Volkswagen Newsroom, Electrifying). That is one of the best-documented EV longevity results anywhere, far above the 70% VW guarantees.

For a wider frame, Geotab's telematics analysis puts average EV degradation at about 2.3% per year, closer to 1.5% for mostly-AC-charged cars and up to about 3.0% for heavy rapid-charge users. That Geotab figure is a fleet-wide average across many models, not an ID.3-specific number.

Against that, there are lower-confidence owner reports of some early 2020 to 2021 cars losing a noticeable 10 to 15% of usable range within the first 40,000 to 60,000 km. These come from owner and blog reports rather than an aggregated study, so treat them as anecdotal. Either way the spread between a well-kept ID.3 and a tired early car is wide, and only a test tells you which one you are looking at. Known issues and recalls

Two separate battery recalls bracket the ID.3's life, and build date decides which, if any, applies.

In 2022 Volkswagen ran a service action covering around 10,000 ID.3 and ID.4 units built in 2020, flagged for potentially defective high-voltage cell modules. The modules were inspected and replaced free of charge where needed (InsideEVs, electrive).

In March 2026 Volkswagen announced a much larger recall of around 94,031 EVs worldwide for a battery-module fault that, in very rare cases, could cause thermal overload within a module and, in extreme situations, a fire. The action spans the ID.3, ID.4, ID.5 and ID.Buzz plus Cupra Born models built during a limited window, and includes 2,261 UK ID.3 Pro S cars. The remedy is a software update, a test of the high-voltage battery modules and replacement of any module if required. Volkswagen reported no UK injuries or incidents from this fault, so it is a precautionary action (Regit, Auto Express, autoevolution).

This is a UK and worldwide manufacturer recall, not a US-only notice, but the buyer's question is specific: has this particular car had the recall work completed? A build date in the affected window with no recall record is a reason to check, not to panic. Separately, launch 2020 to 2021 cars shipped with unfinished software, and later updates raised DC charging to around 170 kW and improved consumption, so software version is a real used-buying variable (Electrifying, electrive). The 70% floor is a low bar: the ADAC car was still near 91% at 160,000 km.
