Is a Used Electric Car Worth It?

Ask most people what puts them off a used EV and eventually you reach the same place. What if the battery fails, and what would that cost me?
It is a fair fear, because the numbers are real. A full battery replacement can run from £12,000 to £25,000 or more depending on the car. There is a second layer of protection too. Manufacturer battery warranties commonly run to around eight years or 100,000 miles, typically guaranteeing the battery will not drop below roughly 70% capacity in that window, though the exact terms vary by brand and are worth checking on the specific car. Many used EVs are still comfortably inside that cover. So the true cost of a genuine battery problem is often not the full replacement bill at all, because the warranty is standing behind it.

The one thing you have to verify
Here is where the honest answer lands. Everything above is true on average, but you are not buying an average. You are buying one specific car with one specific history, and averages tell you nothing about whether this battery has been looked after.
The dashboard will not tell you. A test drive will not tell you. Even a low mileage does not guarantee a healthy battery, because how a car was charged and stored matters as much as how far it was driven. The battery is the one major component whose condition is genuinely invisible from the outside.
That is the gap you need to close before you commit. Not with a guess, and not with the seller's word, but with an actual measurement of the battery's state of health. Yes, more often than not, with one condition attached.
The economics genuinely stack up. You get cheaper running costs, and you buy after the worst of the depreciation has already been taken by someone else. The battery fear, while understandable, is largely answered by how these batteries actually age and by the warranties sitting behind them. The degradation reality is reassuring, not alarming.
The condition is simple. Verify the battery on the exact car you are buying. Do that, and a used EV moves from a gamble to a well-judged purchase. Skip it, and you are betting on the one thing you cannot see.
