The Tesla Model 3 is the UK's top-selling and fastest-selling used electric car. It is also one of the few EVs where the pack you get genuinely changes what to expect, because Tesla fits two very different chemistries by trim.
Standard Range and RWD cars use a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) pack, while Long Range and Performance cars use nickel-based (NCA or NMC) cells. Those two chemistries age at different rates and are charged to different levels, so a listing that just says "Model 3" does not tell you which one is in front of you. A dashboard percentage does not prove real state of health; a direct read does.

Battery design and cooling
Every Model 3 variant is liquid-cooled with glycol coolant, part of why the cars aged well. The nickel-based Long Range and Performance packs use cylindrical 2170 cells with a serpentine ribbon cooling tube threaded between the cells; the LFP Standard Range packs are prismatic cells on a base cooling plate.

Known issues and recalls
Most Model 3 owner concerns are normal degradation, perceived range loss and BMS calibration quirks rather than pack failures. The recall history is worth reading factually.
In October 2025, Tesla recalled 12,963 US cars, 2025 Model 3 and 2026 Model Y, for a battery-pack contactor whose solenoid could open and cause a sudden loss of drive power. This was a US-only NHTSA recall, so UK applicability should be confirmed for a specific VIN. A 2019 to 2022 inverter recall on some imported and China-built cars could cause loss of power, and a February 2025 recall (25V092) covered around 380,000 cars for a power-steering software bug, not a battery item.
