Tesla Model Y Battery Health, Range & Degradation
The Tesla Model Y is the best-selling used electric SUV in the UK, and like its Model 3 sibling it is one of the few EVs where the pack you get genuinely changes what to expect. Tesla fits two very different battery chemistries depending on trim.
Standard Range and RWD cars generally use a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) pack, while Long Range and Performance cars use nickel-based cells. A listing that just says "Model Y" does not tell you which is in front of you, and a dashboard percentage does not prove real state of health. A direct read does. Real-world range by version
Real-world range sits consistently below the WLTP label, with the usual penalty in cold weather or at sustained motorway speed. Use WLTP as the reference and ignore the US EPA figure, which is measured differently.

Battery design and cooling
Every Model Y variant is liquid-cooled, using a glycol coolant loop, which is a large part of why these cars have aged well in hot and cold climates alike. The nickel-based Long Range and Performance packs use cylindrical 2170 cells with a serpentine cooling ribbon threaded between them; the LFP RWD packs use prismatic cells on a base cooling plate.
Chemistry is the key differentiator. Per the LFP versus NMC comparisons reported by Recharged, LFP cells tolerate routine full charges and high cycle counts and are more robust in heat, while nickel cells deliver more range per kilogram but prefer a partial state of charge. That is why the two trims behave differently on a health test, and why the charging advice for each is not the same.
How the battery ages
Battery ageing is not linear. Recurrent describes an S-shaped curve: a settling drop of a few percent in the first year as the pack beds in, then a long, gentle decline. On that basis Recurrent's data on the top-selling Model 3 and Model Y suggests batteries lose under 10% of capacity after four or five years.
Independent fleet analyses commonly find long-term degradation of around 1.5 to 2.5% per year once the early drop is past. Tesla's own 2023 Impact Report puts average capacity loss for Model 3 and Model Y Long Range cars at about 15% after 200,000 miles, a manufacturer-reported figure that is not independently audited here. High-mileage owner tests published by InsideEVs, including an LFP Model Y past 100,000 miles, support the picture that these packs are durable.

Known issues and recalls
Recalls should be read carefully, because most Tesla actions are logged by the US NHTSA and do not automatically apply in the UK.
The one battery-relevant action is a contactor recall. In October 2025 Tesla recalled 12,963 US cars, covering 2025 Model 3 and 2026 Model Y, over a battery-pack contactor whose solenoid could open and cause a sudden loss of drive power. This is a battery-adjacent hardware fault rather than cell degradation, and it was a US-only NHTSA recall, so UK applicability should be verified against GOV.UK for a specific VIN.
Separately, 2026 Model Y cars have been subject to several non-battery US NHTSA recalls, including an improperly secured horn ground wire, seat-back fasteners that may be under-tightened, and a washer hose that can block the nozzles. These are US actions and are not battery matters. None of this means the car in front of you is affected or unaffected; an independent test tells you whether this specific pack is healthy and whether any battery-related remedy was carried out. Battery warranty
Tesla covers the battery and drive unit for 8 years or 100,000 miles on RWD cars, and 8 years or 120,000 miles on Long Range and Performance, whichever comes first. Across all trims the warranty guarantees the pack will retain at least 70% of its original capacity over that term; if it falls below, Tesla repairs or replaces it.
The cover is tied to the car's age and mileage rather than to the owner, so whatever term remains transfers to you as a used buyer. Note that Tesla no longer offers an extended warranty in the UK, so once the original term lapses there is no factory top-up to buy. Should I charge a used Model Y to 100% or 80%?
It depends on the chemistry. Tesla recommends charging LFP Standard Range and RWD cars to 100% routinely, but keeping nickel-based Long Range and Performance cars to about 80 to 90% for daily use. So a used RWD shown at 100% and a Long Range shown at 90% are not a like-for-like comparison, which is one reason an independent read helps.
